The RBI allows investments in shares/securities
on repatriation basis under various schemes. The amount to be invested
should be remitted from abroad or paid out of funds held in the investor's
NRE/FCNR account.
Investment Opportunities for NRIs /PIOs
- NRIs/PIOs permitted to invest in a firm or proprietary concern with repatriation basis with the approval of Government of India / Reserve Bank of Inda.
- NRIs/PIOs are permitted to invest in a firm / proprietary concern on non repatriation basis without prior approval of Reserve Bank of India, subject to the concern not being engaged in Agricultural / Plantation or real estate business ie. Dealing in land and immovable properties with a view to earning profit or earning income out of it.
- NRIs/PIOs permitted to invest in shares / convertible debenture of Indian Companies whether by Public Issue or Private participation on non-repatriation basis without any limit.
- NRIs/PIOs can also without any limit purchase on non-repatriation basis, dated Government securities, Treasury Bills, Units of Domestic Mutual Funds and Money Market mutual funds.
- Investment on repatriation basis is permitted in eligible industries within the sectoral caps permitted by the Government of India.
- Under Portfolio Investment, NRIs/PIOs can purchase shares / convertible debentures on repatriation /non-repatriation basis upto 5% of the paid up capital / paid up value of each series of debentrues. The aggregate paid up value of shares / convertible debentures purchased by all NRIs should not exceed 10% of the paid up capital of the company / paid up value of the series of debentures. The aggregate ceiling of 10% can be raised to 24% by the General Body of the company.
