NATIONAL BANKING CONFERENCE AND RESEARCH SEMINAR at
INDIAN BANK MANAGEMENT ACADEMY
FOR GROWTH AND EXCELLENCE (IMAGE), CHENNAI |
Indian Bank is one of the premier financial institutions that pioneered national banking in India. Established in 1907, it has grown to become a major financial institution, that became nationalized in 1969 and showed exceptional growth thereafter with its continous focus on product innovations and quality standards in distribution of services. It has successfully overcome pressures on loan quality in the late 1990s by a combination of dynamic leadership and committed management and staff. Its successful turnaround is more than adequately reflected by the resounding success of its initial public offering early this year and continued investor interest in the bank’s stock. In the recent period it launched some of the unique programmes in financial inclusion that became a model for other banks.
Indian bank reflects the rigour and resurgence of national banking in India. To celebrate the spirit of its contribution to the growth of national banking in the last one hundred years, Indian Bank, as a part of its Centenary Celebrations, is organizing a conference and a research seminar, which is once again unique to Indian bank, to further promote the importance and significance of national banking. The centenary celebrations were flagged off by His Excellency, Dr. Abdul Kalam, President of India, on September 4th 2006. On the eve of its concluding part of the Centenary Celebrations, Indian Bank takes pride in its initiative for creating a platform that could play an effective role in promoting the interests of national banking and deliberating on key issues for its growth and development.
Banking systems all over the world are experiencing rapid growth and surge in profitability. In the background of strong domestic economic performance and increasing access to global business opportunities, banks are experiencing exceptional growth in the recent period. According to a 2007 survey by The Banker, London, global top 1000 banks showed a rise of over 23.4 percent in profitability in 2006 on the top of 22.7 percent profit growth registered by this group in 2005. Indian banking too witnessed sharp growth in terms of business and profitability in the last few years.
An important aspect of growth of the banking systems in the emerging markets is growing importance and significance of the national banking systems. In the aftermath of the banking sector reforms that opened up banking sector to competition from within and outside, there were concerns about the decline in the scope of the domestic banking based on the experience of banking systems in Latin America and Central Europe, where the share of assets held by the domestic banking system declined drastically after liberalization. India has managed to overcome these concerns and showed exceptional resilience and growth of the domestic banking that should augur well for supporting the growth of the real economy. While robust progress has been achieved in achieving growth and profitability, challenges of harnessing the emerging opportunities in India and in global markets, designing effective strategies to overcome domestic and global competition, developing international business, expanding the scope of financial inclusion, smooth transition to Basel II environment and setting up efficient risk management systems and procedures are a few of the major tasks ahead for the national banking to pursue and accomplish
In the background of rapid advances made by the domestic banking in terms of business growth and profitability, there was a need felt for designing a platform that combines perspectives of banking professionals with empirical research on a wide range of issues concerning the growth and development of domestic banking system.
The National Banking Conference and Research Seminar is borne out of this objective and is an endeavor to engage in study and research of issues of relevance and significance to the growth and development of national banking.
